People knew the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team was a special when they stomped the perennial power Mount Union last winter, 52-14, and took home the National Championship for the fifth time in seven years.
It only got sweeter for the Warhawks as basketball season came to a close. Again, UW-Whitewater found themselves huddled together, hoisting the hardware over their heads for the second time in three seasons.
The fate of the trifecta was now in the hands of the men’s baseball team, who under coach John Vodenlich has gone 402-128-1 in 11 seasons. So the odds were fairly good, but the baseball team still had a lot of pressure.
To say they answered the call would be a huge understatement.
The baseball team finished #3 in the D3baseball.com final regular season standings and went on to go 4-0 in the double elimination tournament. They finished their season winning 11 in a row and 19 of their last 20 contests to finish up the season at an impressive 44-7. The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel has the full recap of the game, which includes the starting pitcher Scott Plaza shutting down Emory University on three days rest.
Whitewash! UW-Whitewater wins #NCAAD3 baseball title to become 1st school in history to sweep football, men's hoops & baseball in one year.
