Once again, Urban Meyer has made me throw up a little bit in my mouth. The pedestal he has put Tim Tebow on in Florida is as high as the eye can see and you bet your ass Urban Meyer will do anything to keep it upright and make it higher. God forbid someone say something negative (or in this case, perceived as negative) about Meyer’s pseudo son, Tim Tebow.
“You never know with Tim,” Thompson said. “You can bolt, you think he’s running but he’ll come up and pass it to you. You just have to be ready at all times. With Brantley, everything’s with rhythm, time. You know what I mean, a real quarterback.”
When I read that, I knew exactly what Deonte Thompson was trying to say. He was simply saying that Tim’s style of play was to scramble out of the pocket, look down field briefly for an open receiver (often a tight end) and if they weren’t open he would just take off. John Brantley’s style is more polished than that of Tebow’s. Brantley stays in the pocket and goes through his progressions like a quarterback is supposed to. He is a prostyle quarterback that drops back while you were never really sure what you were going to get with Tebow. Jeremy Fowler, sports reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, found out just how much Meyer is still wrapped up in Tebow. Monday evening Fowler published a story about wide receiver Deonte Thompson in which talked about how he was ready for the new era in Gators football. Thompson is coming off a less than stellar year where he had 24 catches for 343 yards and only 4 touchdowns. Most all of that can be attributed to the style of quarterback Tebow, who was more of a scrambling, often running quarterback. When asked about new Florida quarterback he referred to him as a “pure passer”. That is something that no one in the history of people said about Tim Tebow once while he was playing at Florida. When comparing the two, Thompson may have misspoke, but I understand what he was saying.
Thompson wasn’t trying to say that Tebow wasn’t a real quarterback. No one could say that. Had he just said “You know what I mean, a more prostyle quarterback” this wouldn’t have been an issue at all and I believe that is exactly what he meant by his comments. For Urban Meyer to go after Fowler the way he did was totally uncalled for. I can’t believe that Meyer actually thinks that Thompson was taking a dig at Tebow. To me that is laughable. And even if, for arguments sake, that Thompson was talking about his old quarterback in negative way, wouldn’t that be more of a Meyer/Thompson ordeal than a Meyer/Fowler? He came after Fowler for simply doing his job. Everyone has a part of their job that they wish they didn’t have to do, unfortunately that is why it is called a job. They pay Fowler to cover Gators football. They pay Meyer to coach Gators football. How about Meyer does his job and handles his players and let’s Fowler do his job?
