Ted Lasso, aka Jason Sudeikis formerly of Saturday Night Live fame, is the new coach of the English Premier League Tottenham Hotspur. He sounds like a cross between Coach Bud Kilmer and Coach Eric Taylor but with no idea how to coach soccer, let alone know the rules. Lasso is relying on his assistant coaches and FIFA to explain the game to him and the result is pretty damn funny.
NBC Sports created Ted Lasso to promote their new coverage of the English Premier League on their network. In October, NBC Sports paid the EPL a record $250 million to air up to 380 games for the next three seasons. With Ted Lasso, NBC Sports hopes to intrigue a maybe otherwise uninterested American sports fan.
At least that’s my guess.
